Better Neighbor Project Hosts First Pet Wellness Day of 2024

“It’s a comfort to us to know that these services are available for the community, especially for residents that are hard-pressed right now with the cost of living so high”.   – LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis

The Better Neighbor Project, an initiative from the Michelson Found Animals Foundation, recently held its first Pet Wellness Day of 2024. The event, which was organized in partnership with Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis and Eastmont Community Center, took place at the East LA Civic Center.

And it rained. A lot. Despite the weather, the local community, volunteers, and partners braved downpours to help the Found Animals team deliver care to hundreds of dogs and cats. This included grooming, vaccinations, and spay and neuter services at free or reduced cost.

As the day came to a close, 555 pets had received free wellness and hygiene care; 31 pets were spayed or neutered; 500 pet meals were distributed; 109 microchips were registered; and 173 pet ID tags were requested.

“It’s a comfort to us to know that these services are available for the community, especially for residents that are hard-pressed right now with the cost of living so high,” Solis said. “All of these amenities…are wonderful.’

Michelson Found Animals Foundation launched the Better Neighbor Project to bring vital pet care and veterinary services to underserved Los Angeles communities. The goal of the project is to ensure that no one has to surrender their pet due to financial hardship.

“This is one of the most important things we do at the foundation,” Geoffrey Baum, Executive Director of Michelson Philanthropies, said. “We’re working with our partners in the community to provide free vaccination services, free grooming services, [and] access to spay and neuter services.”

Partners at the event included the Community Animal Medicine Project (CAMP) and the Paw Mission, who both provide vaccines and low-cost spay and neuter services. Find out more about upcoming Better Neighbor Project events and volunteer opportunities on the Michelson Found Animals website.
