Encouraging Invention Among Students – Jaseem Bhatti

Jaseem Bhatti, Michelson IP 2020 Essay Winner

Inspired by the Michelson Institute for Intellectual Property, an initiative of the Michelson 20MM Foundation, college student Jaseem Bhatti says he invents to solve real-world problems. Bhatti is now devising a robot for tracking people’s temperatures in public places to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

His achievements to date include awards from invention and engineering competitions for prototypes of a delivery drone, anti-flooding truck, and robot toy. “In the latter, I placed third out of 70 engineers who took part in the contest,” Bhatti says. “My key to winning was the explanation and design—which I learned through studying IP.”

Bhatti was first introduced to intellectual property (IP) by his college mentor, who recommended he read The Intangible Advantage: Understanding Intellectual Property in the New Economy. Published by the Michelson 20MM Foundation and made possible through support from the foundation’s founders, Dr. Gary K. Michelson and Alya Michelson, The Intangible Advantage is the first IP textbook for ordinary citizens and college students.

Bhatti then took the Michelson Institute for Intellectual Property’s free online course, “Intellectual Property: Inventors, Entrepreneurs, Creators.”

Students who completed the course shared their perspectives on IP in an essay contest in June 2020. Bhatti won, received $500, and had his essay published in Inventors Digest and on the Michelson IP blog.
