It’s Time to be Anti-Racist: Restoring Affirmative Action to Counter Systemic Racism

“It is no longer sufficient to be non-racist; now it is time for everyone to be anti-racist.” – Dr. Gary Michelson

“I now realize that expecting people to compete when deprived of an even playing field from the beginning is discriminatory. It is no longer sufficient to be non-racist; now it is time for everyone to be anti-racist,” Dr. Gary K. Michelson, in an interview shared with Forbes magazine.

Dr. Michelson joined Patricia Quillin, Steve and Connie Ballmer, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Vice President Kamala Harris (then Senator Harris), among others, in supporting restoring affirmative action through Proposition 16. If voters passed Proposition 16, public universities in California would have been able to factor demographic indicators into the application process, including race, gender, and ethnicity. As Dr. Michelson noted, “This measure will help counter systemic racism and create more economic and educational opportunities for California’s underserved communities.”
