Universities Should Prioritize IP Education as Vigorously as STEM

Dr. Gary K. Michelson encourages universities to prioritize intellectual property (IP) education in the same way they prioritize science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Encouraging intellectual property education

As post-secondary institutions continue to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, restructuring how they teach and support students, now is the time for them to reinvent their innovation ecosystems. Dr. Gary K. Michelson, a prolific inventor, encourages universities to prioritize intellectual property (IP) education in the same way they prioritize science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) as the  pathway to success.

Drawing on a report published by VentureWell and underwritten by The Michelson Institute for Intellectual Property, Dr. Michelson outlines the “ideal state” of a university-based system: 1) Clear Guiding Values; 2) Meaningful IP Education; 3) Comprehensive University Support; and 4) Building External Connections and Community. Implementing a university-based system could significantly reduce the IP opportunity gaps faced by females and minority inventors by making IP education more accessible to all students.
